Choosing to study Architecture and Urban Planning was an easy decision, as drawing has been a part of my life since I was very young. My parents say that even at the age of two, when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, the answer was always the same: “a designer.”

In 2001, I enrolled in the Architecture and Urban Planning course at Gama Filho University in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where I quickly fell in love with the entire curriculum. It was the beginning of a great journey, where I could not only combine art and architecture, but also contribute to making dreams come true. After all, as an architect and urban planner, I would be responsible for enabling the construction of homes and various other spaces in the way people have always dreamed of.

I have worked as an architect in the interior design market since 2006 and collaborated on projects for renowned Brazilian architecture and interior design firms. I participated with a project of my own design in the main decoration show in Latin America, Casa Cor; and I served the Brazilian Navy as an architect in the Projects Department of the Directorate of Civil Works of the Navy.

In 2017, I accepted a new challenge: a change of scenery! Currently, my family and I live in Aveiro, Portugal, where I dedicate myself exclusively to developing interior architecture projects in the residential, commercial, and corporate areas.

The projects I develop are modern, in a clean style, with a base of neutral colors and functional furniture, with the premise of following a lighter and simpler lifestyle.

I believe that each project is unique, as it reflects the personality and life story of each client. For me, it is a privilege to be able to create and transform cold and lifeless spaces into environments that overflow with comfort and harmony. Transforming dreams into reality, that’s my motto!

Therefore, forget all the myths about minimalism; it’s not about “empty” or “poorly decorated” spaces. The key here is the intelligent use of resources, materials, and objects. And most importantly: avoiding excess.

The key to minimalism is offering a space of peace and tranquility amidst the chaos of life in society. This is achieved through greater contact with what is most basic to us, such as nature, which brings us peace.

There’s a lifesaver rule when searching for the perfect color palette for your project: the 60-30-10 rule.

This is simply the recommended proportion to bring balance to the color scheme. 60% represents the main color for the space. This color will be present in the major details, such as wall paint, rugs, and sofas.

The next 30% is the secondary color. It’s different enough from the main color to stand out on its own, and it also appears much less frequently. Finally, the last 10% represents the complementary color. It’s in the details of fabrics, decorative objects, and lighting fixtures. This is because it’s much easier to create the room’s decor starting from these indispensable objects. It’s from them that the other elements are considered.

Think about all the furniture you can’t do without in your project. Don’t leave finding a place for these pieces until later. Use them as a reference, integrating the colors that stand out most into the palette. This tip is especially useful for those who need to incorporate a table, a painting, etc., into the room.

Light sources, their type and quality directly influence how we feel in a particular place.

Lighting highlights the strong points of a decor.

Playing with points of warm or cool, direct or indirect light helps to highlight those special points in the environment.

In the image above, we see natural light coming through the window. However, several points of artificial light provide strategic illumination during the night.

In this project of my own design, natural light illuminates the room during the day through large windows with light-colored curtains.

However, at night, light fixtures scattered throughout the room provide a cozy, warm illumination, in addition to the charming pendant lamp that decorates the space while also casting light on the dining table.

Direct and indirect light

Direct light shines directly onto surfaces. It can highlight decorative elements or illuminate specific areas where natural light doesn’t reach. It is also widely used in spaces that require greater concentration, such as work desks.

However, because it creates shadows with a significant difference between the brightest and darkest points, it can become tiring and should be used judiciously.

To create a softer effect, indirect light is used, which is directed to a surface and then reflected in different directions. Another option is to use diffused light, where a glass or acrylic diffuser softens the light, which spreads without creating very strong shadows.

White or yellowish light?

When we talk about cool or warm light, we are referring to the temperature of the light – that is, the color of the lamp.

White light (cool light) is more stimulating and makes it easier to see objects, and therefore it is perfect for work environments, offices, and residential spaces such as bathrooms, kitchens, and service areas.

Yellow light (warm light), on the other hand, provides the feeling of comfort necessary for relaxing environments and social gatherings, such as the living room and bedrooms.

However, they are not mutually exclusive and can be combined to achieve the desired effect.

Round mirrors give a romantic feel and look beautiful hanging in the entrance hall. But you can also opt for large mirrors, even ones that cover an entire wall.

Just remember to balance this object with the rest of the decor and lighting to avoid visual clutter.

When we arrive home, we should leave the street outside! The entrance hall serves this purpose. If it’s raining, that’s where we hang our umbrella to prevent moisture and dirt from entering the other rooms.

Incidentally, coat racks also serve to keep a coat handy for cold days or even a hat for when the sun is very strong. This way, the family is always prepared to face any weather.

Organize your hallway with functional furniture.

The entrance hall serves this purpose: it’s a space where we can keep some important items handy for when we have to rush out of the house. But be careful with the accumulation of objects. In addition to obstructing the passage, they can create visual clutter.

Invest in furniture that helps organize the space and, at the same time, helps avoid excess. The entrance hall is not a storage room, and functional furniture is the best way to put everything in its place.

Speaking of leaving problems outside, that also applies to dirt. Carpets are essential so that you and your guests can wipe your feet before entering, which makes cleaning the house much easier!
